Go Green
What if the church truly cared for the earth like God intended. The church should be the leading influence on preserving the earth. Instead we refuse to recycle, pick up trash or even support alternative methods of natural resources. This planet is a gift from God. In the story of the great flood, God makes a promise to never destroy the earth by flood again. He makes that promise with three different groups, first with mankind, second with the animal kingdom and thirdly with the earth itself. When you read through the bible you see God’s love for earth. As far as we know, earth is the only planet that is able and currently sustaining life. What if we cared for the earth the way God does? Most people believe the earth will be destroyed and we will get a new one so why bother. So let me ask you, if you treat this planet with such distain why should he give us a new one? Not to say he won’t but, should he? Caring for the creation shows respect for the creator. Let’s honor God and his creation. What if we lead the community in earth day? What if we took a Saturday and started picking up trash around the community? What if the local church was the place we took our recyclables? Can you think of other ways?

Caring for the Earth shouldn't be a contraindiction to being a Christian, but I believe the envirmentalism as a political movement is. Going Green is a great way to mobilize people, because most people can see the value in taking care of our land, but that also makes it a deceptive tool to control people. And we have to be careful not to move into Gaia worship, serving a creation and not the creator. Not to mention, that "going green" implies that we weild any power over Washington DC or the global bankers...the people who have the actual power to change things. If we really cared for the Earth, we would start living locally. Stop buying from over seas, grow your own organic food. How much energy is wasted transporting goods from China to Nashville? Nothing is going to change that is not profitable to someone.
ReplyDeleteCarbon Credits and Recycling won't save this earth, nothing will. But they will allow our already out of control "kings of this earth" to futher control us and our children. I'm not trying to knock your idea, I'm sure it will be very popular and there is nothing wrong with what you are saying, but I personally feel very uncomfortable with this whole going green movement...people are passionate about this and along with evolution, it has all of the characterists of a religion. Just try to talk someone out of either belief. Saving the earth goes right along with New Age belief systems, and it is the only reasonable candidate for a one world religion that I can think of. That doesn't mean that I believe the end is certainly near, but I believe these are the reasons many christians feel an adversion to going green. If you believe God is calling you to reconcile going green with being a Christian, you will want to be able to do so in an informed way because I am sure I am not the only Christian who is have difficulty with this subject.
I am open to anything you have to say, because I want to know the truth more than I want to be right. That won't be the case with some people that you approach with this same subject. You may want to be ready to answer these questions in a non-condemning way. You say that "most people believe the earth will be destroyed so why bother"...I don't think that most people believe that. It may seem that way, because those of us who do not support the green movement are often demonized....I totally respect the planet God created, but I won't let it become an idol.
I totally agree we should not put the creation above the creator. The Bible even speaks about that very thing. I do, however, agree with the Native Americans who lived off the land and only took what they needed. And then, used everything of what they took, not just the best parts. I think we have a responsibility to be wise and good stewards of what God has given.
ReplyDeleteI am not questioning the need to care for the land God gave us, or the physical bodies he gave us...I didn't mean that. However I am questioning the methods and intention of the "green movement" I think that some Christians rebel against all things "green" for this reason...they see something very wrong in the leaders who believe that the earth should come before people. (I'm not suggesting that is what you think)
ReplyDeleteThe "green movement" is behind the Carbon Credits, Cash for Clunkers, and host of other bad ideas. Many of those leading the going green campaign support Planned Parenthood because they believe there are just too many people and not enough resources....I am not convinced that the resources are almost gone, but even if they are, do we really want to have a One Child Only Policy, or a healthcare package that deems someone who is 64 too old to treat because at that point they are useless?
Maybe this all seem unrelated, but I think there is a huge shift in the way people are thinking and after a few generations, it maybe pretty easy to convince the average person that population must be contolled at any cost for the sake of the planet....
So yes, taking what I need and being a good steward is something that I plan to do because that is what I believe is right, but I probably won't celebrate Earth Day, because I don't want to be a part of the shift in our culture that I see happening....if you have any evidence that I am wrong about this, I would openly listen. I don't like feeling so pesimistic about things.
I really didn't mean to come off rude in my original post...it is a good thing to care for our earth...I think we can learn a lot about God, by studying his creation, and I believe this was the original intention of science. I have also noticed that the Bible uses parables about nature to demenstrate things to us, but we are so out of touch with our world that we know more about POPculture than AGRIculture. We have all been steered way off track and it is a good thing that you are searching for a way back to the way things ought to be. People don't know what to do to right these wrongs, and we need Christian Leadership to help lead the way. When people become fearful, they look for a leader...this unfortunely gives people with bad intentions an oppritunity to lead down the wrong path. So yes, it would be good for the a church to become active in finding solutions.
WOW I am long winded.
