What is Sin? part 2

I wanted to start by saying there is no exhaustive list of sins in the bible and there is no simple answer. I don’t believe sin is an act we can just point out and say there it is. While I do believe there are some sins that can be named, some cannot. Let me give this example: two men give to the local church. One does it from the desire of his heart, the other gives to see if God will pay his bills that week because the preacher said, “if I give He would give back to me”. Both men shared the same act of giving, but one was motivated by greed while the other was motivated by the desire to please God.

Sin is anything that moves us away from God.

Let me end this by saying our goal is to become connected to God so if that is our focus, we don’t have to worry about sin.

  1. First let me say that, my definition of sin was the same as your, so I am not disagreeing with you, but this has brought up a lot of questions in my mind.....this is a good topic that you brought up.

Do you say that we don't have to worry about sin because ours are forgiven or because you believe that sin is determined by intention? or for some other reason?

What about idle behaviors that do not bring us closer to God? I watched at least an hour of TV last night with Bobby and I don't think that brought me closer to God. Was that a sin? Does it depend on what I watched and if so, why?

What about fear? When fear overtakes your mind, is that a sin? I believe that it may be, but try to stop being afraid of something. Fear shows lack of faith. If you have faith, why fear? Can you have faith and fear at the same time? Maybe this seems like it is off subject, but fear doesn't bring you closer to God, so that would be a sin.

Envy is another hard one to control..you can say that you are happy for someone else who has something you want, but when you really want something and it goes to someone else, it is hard to not feel some jealousy..as a Christian, we try not to act on that jealousy or let it consume us, but does that make it less of a sin?

I'm not expecting you to tell me yes or no, that is a sin and that isn't...these are just some questions that I have.

Does the very fact that I care enough to ask these questions define my standing in Christ? If I suddenly feel something that I have been doing or thinking is a sin, does it make it more sinful when I indulge in that act or thought?

Wow, sorry, this is probably more that you asked for when you posted this.
